Panel discussion – Room 303. Tuesday December 3rd, 2 PM-3 PM
“What About Our Routers? A Critical Cybersecurity Threat Lurking in Plain Sight”. This panel will:
- Examine the true extent and gravity of the vulnerabilities and compromise woven into our networking equipment;
- Discuss the need to reshore manufacturing of routers to the United States as a matter a urgent national security concern;
- Review the economic opportunity of disrupting and moving our currently captive supply chain back onshore;
- Evaluate the requirements that would need to be addressed to enable and expedite such a program;
- Explore short term solutions to mitigating this threat until that transition can be completed.
Featuring experts from both the private and public sector, the panel focuses on these fundamental issues, which should be an urgent national security priority:
- All of the billions we spend on VPNs, ZTNA and Zero Trust Security is worthless if we can’t trust our hardware.
- Over 90% of consumer and SMB routers are made in China, often with deliberate vulnerabilities and back doors – and every major vendor has experienced catastrophic compromises due to this.
- There is currently no viable alternative to securing these foreign devices and the supply chain of components.
The urgency of this threat was underscored by congressional testimony from NSA and FBI heads, warning that the PRC could severely impact our critical infrastructure. Despite responses regarding microchips and specific actors like Huawei and TikTok, this critical issue received little attention. While the ROUTERS Act (H.R. 7589) aims to address this, meaningful action may take years.
