Faction Networks announced today that it has been accepted as a pilot system to be tested under ORION, a technology accelerator and innovation ecosystem focused on cyber assurance, integration, demonstration and transition of military and cyber capabilities within IoT. Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of devices and systems embedded with sensors for collecting, exchanging, and processing data.

Faction Networks offers a more secure alternative to traditional VPN and firewall solutions by eliminating significant vulnerabilities that could lead to catastrophic hacks. The platform simplifies the Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) experience, providing the flexibility and segmentation of SoftwareDefined Networks (SDNs) without the usual complexity and high costs. This approach makes true Zero Trust security for networking and end-to-end data encryption accessible to all. Additionally, Faction Pods and Portals power true Zero Trust device security by taking smart, dumb, and legacy devices off the public Internet and into a private, secure Faction Network, thereby eliminating their exposure to cloudbased attacks.

ORION, which stands for Open-Architecture, Resilient IoT for Operational Networks, is a collaborative initiative between Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Information Directorate, Assured Information Security (AIS), Quanterion Solutions Incorporated, the Griffiss Institute, and the New York State Technology Enterprise Corporation (NYSTEC).

ORION’s team of technical experts maintain a broad range of capabilities, enabling them to integrate and test nearly any IoT system. By leveraging a collection of tools and resources, ORION evaluates the underlying and enabling technologies—such as embedded systems, wireless communication technologies, cloud services, and user applications. This comprehensive assessment allows ORION to offer a spectrum of customized support options for clients across government, industrial, academic, and individual sectors, helping them thrive in the ever-changing world of IoT.

“We are tremendously excited to be a part of ORION’s Pilot Program,” said Geoff Halstead, Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer of Faction Networks. “This collaboration will enable us to leverage advanced resources and expertise to enhance our technology and solutions in the rapidly evolving landscape of IoT security. It underscores our commitment to innovation and excellence, ensuring that we deliver on our promise of true Zero Trust security for networking, data and smart, dumb and legacy devices of all kinds to ensure that our customer’s critical systems are safeguarded against constantly evolving threats.”

“ORION is pleased to welcome Faction Networks to our pilot assessments,” said Eric Thayer, Chief Engineer at AIS and ORION technical lead. “We look forward to evaluating the cybersecurity of their system and supporting their readiness to meet the stringent cybersecurity standards required for operational systems of this kind. This collaboration aims to strengthen the FACTION Networks solution against emerging cybersecurity threats.”
